In professions such as social work and psychology, self-care is a crucial aspect of our work. I am completing a social work degree. Reminders engage in self-care have been integral in my education. Before I started my first field placement, I did not realize the importance of self-care. Self-care is effective in helping diffuse stress. Maintaining self-care ensures we are effective in our work.
I share these tips to help you decompress and relax.
Write. Journalling or using another outlet to write creates a space for you to unload stressful thoughts. Journalling allows you to observe and explore your feelings. Gaining clarity through written expression may be helpful when working through a mental block.
Get enough sleep. Sleep is important to maintain both physical and mental well-being. Stress and busy schedules can make this an elusive idea. If it is not possible to modify your nighttime routine, a power nap can supplement your sleep. Creating a relaxing nighttime routine can help you fall asleep faster, and remain relaxed.
Find an enjoyable hobby. I began this blog as a way to increase my writing time, outside of the writing required for university. Hobbies such as writing or exercising can provide a welcomed distraction from stress. Focusing on a hobby allows your mind to relax and unwind.
If you have any self-care tips you use, I’d love to hear about them below!
