Self-Care Strategies

In professions such as social work and psychology, self-care is a crucial aspect of our work.  I am completing a social work degree. Reminders engage in self-care have been integral in my education. Before I started my first field placement, I did not realize the importance of self-care. Self-care is effective in helping diffuse stress. Maintaining self-care ensures we are effective in our work.

I share these tips to help you decompress and relax.

Write. Journalling or using another outlet to write creates a space for you to unload stressful thoughts. Journalling allows you to observe and explore your feelings. Gaining clarity through written expression may be helpful when working through a mental block.

Get enough sleep. Sleep is important to maintain both physical and mental well-being. Stress and busy schedules can make this an elusive idea. If it is not possible to modify your nighttime routine, a power nap can supplement your sleep. Creating a relaxing nighttime routine can help you fall asleep faster, and remain relaxed.

Find an enjoyable hobby. I began this blog as a way to increase my writing time, outside of  the writing required for university. Hobbies such as writing or exercising can provide a welcomed distraction from stress. Focusing on a hobby allows your mind to relax and unwind.

If you have any self-care tips you use, I’d love to hear about them below!

  1. Make sure you make time for yourself. Especially in careers like social care where your constantly caring for others, you need to make sure you take time out to focus on yourself

  2. This is a great post. I was planning on doing something in the same vein soon! I used to teach self care to women newly out of prison.

Bubble bath. Paint your nails. Phone calls. Write letters. Watch a film. Cry. Cook. Sleep. Buy an affordable treat. Face mask. Long walk. Be as sociable or anti social as you like. Take an hour break from technology. Read. Mediate. Play a board game. Chocolate meditation. Go for a massage. Have a pj day. Go to the gym. Etc!
