3 Easy Ways to Practice Self-Care and Avoid Burnout as a Student or Professional

Hello, lovelies!

If you are a student or a professional, you are bound to experience burnout. It is important to devote time to yourself to lessen the effects of burnout on your mental and physical health. Self-care comes in a variety of forms, but here are a few simple ways that you can implement it into your daily routine!

Wait, what is burnout?

Simply, burnout is physical or mental collapse that results from being overworked. When you experience full burnout, you are unable to function effectively on a personal or professional level.

3 Ways to Practice Self-Care and Avoid Burnout

1. Try to get more sleep

Lack of sleep is a major predictor of burnout. Try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule or a relaxing routine to help you unwind at the end of the day. Once you begin to sleep better, this becomes a key sign that you’re recovering from burnout.

2. Make time for activities that you enjoy

The key here is to practice activities that are also self-care for you. Find activities that nourish and relax you. Activities that I engage in to relax include exercising, blogging, and journaling.

3. When feeling overwhelmed, do something simple but productive

When you feel overwhelmed or overworked, do a simple activity to clear your mind. It can be something as simple as checking e-mails, cleaning, or checking messages. These small tasks can help you determine which smaller tasks are ‘doable’ at that moment and clears you mind to let you return to larger tasks.

3 Products I Use Every Morning to Achieve Clear, Radiant Skin

Hello, lovelies!

My morning skincare and makeup routine is one of the best parts of my day. After many months of trial and error, I’ve finally determined a skincare routine that works for my dry, acne-prone skin. I apply specific products each morning to keep my skin clear, soft, and radiant. Here’s a peek into my morning skincare routine!

1. Tatcha The Deep Cleanse

I cannot say enough wonderful things about my Tatcha cleanser! I’ve been using this gentle gel cleanser for the past 3-4 months and it has kept my skin clear, soft, and radiant. I often struggle to find cleansers that will not irritate my skin but this one is definitely a winner! I apply it every morning before moisturizer. Not only does this cleanser clear my skin but it also provides a smooth base for my primer.

2. Drunk Elephant Marula Oil

I received a sample of Drunk Elephant’s Marula Oil about a month ago from Sephora. I always hesitate to incorporate oils into my skincare routine but decided to try this one because I’ve heard rave reviews about Drunk Elephant products. To my delight, this fragrance-free facial oil leaves my skin feeling hydrated but not extra oily. I apply a few drops to my entire face and let them absorb into my skin for a softer complexion!

3. Dermalogica Clear Start Breakout Clearing Booster

Typically, I apply Dermalogica’s Breakout Clearing Booster 2-3 times per week to reduce any new breakouts. This product works as a spot treatment. I apply it directly to my breakouts and after one use, I was very impressed with how quickly my skin cleared! I received this product complimentary of Influenster.

What products does your skincare routine consist of? I’d love to hear about products that you use and how they work for you!

REVIEW: Smashbox Always Sharp Lip Liner

Hello, lovelies!

I adore lip liner. After losing more than one lip liner recently, I purchased a new one from Smashbox. I was excited to try a creamy liner, and this one packs incredible staying power when applied!

The Packaging

Smashbox’s Always Sharp Lip Liner is lightweight and easy to use. The liner is formatted like a pencil, and has a cap that self-sharpens when twisted into place. The liner is sophisticated and bears the ‘Smashbox’ logo.

The Lip Liner

The lip liner is creamy and long-wearing. Because it is a self-sharpening lip liner, it automatically sharpens each time the cap is closed. Unlike pencil lip liners, this one does not tug when I apply it to my lips. It dries down without feeling crumbly or tacky.

How to use it

To sharpen the lip liner, twist the cap closed until it clicks. To apply the lip liner, trace along the lines of your lip to achieve the desired pigment.

The Shades

I love the diverse shade range of these lip liners! This liner is available in a range of 15 shades:

  • Nude Dark – Deep chestnut
  • Nude Medium – Medium beige
  • Nude Light – Beige pink
  • Audition – Neutral rose
  • Safe Word – Rose nude
  • Rosebud – Mauve pink
  • Stylist – Rose
  • Crimson – True blue-red
  • Figgy – Red grape
  • Fireball – Bright orange red
  • Pinch Me – Bright coral
  • Screen Queen – Burgundy-red
  • Violet – Berry
  • Plum Role – Dark plum
  • Punked – Deep grey
  • Nude Fair – Light pink

Smashbox’s Always Sharp Lip Liner is a perfect alternative to traditional lip liner formulas if you want a creamy liner that doesn’t dry out the lips. I love wearing this product daily to increase the longevity of my lipstick! Each liner retails for $26 at Sephora.

Your Ultimate Guide to Makeup Brushes: The Ones You Need and How They Work

Hello, lovelies!

Makeup brushes are an essential component of my daily makeup routine. I use a variety of brushes to apply my makeup products, and finding the right ones can truly transform the way your makeup looks. It is very useful to have multiple brushes in your collection. This guide to makeup brushes covers everything you need to know about how to use them!

Powder Brush

A powder brush has long, fluffy bristles to distribute powder (think loose, translucent powder) evenly across the face without leaving the skin feeling caked.

Blush Brush

A blush brush is slightly denser than a powder brush, and has smaller bristles. Most blush brushes feature a dome-shaped head that allows you to apply concentrated colour that can be built and blended.

Contour Brush

Contour brushes are usually angled and have softer, dense bristles that allow you to apply a concentrated amount of product to the face. The angled shape of this brush should fit snugly underneath your cheekbones for precise bronzer application.

Kabuki Brush

This type of brush has a flat top with soft, voluminous bristles to apply bronzer, blush or other types of powder products. A kabuki brush works well to buff product into the skin or into specific areas such as the forehead.

Foundation Brush

Foundation brushes come in a variety of shapes (angled, flat, fluffy) but the most common type is flat. The flat shape of a foundation brush is perfect for applying liquid or cream foundation to the entire face before percise blending.

Fan Brush

This type of brush has a dual purpose – it can be used to apply highlight or to clean up any excess powder on the skin. These brushes have lightweight bristles and are shaped like a fan to delicately apply powder highlight to the cheekbones and nose. These bristles also work well to dust away excess powder from the skin.

Concealer Brush

A concealer brush is typically small and flat to enable precise application to the nooks and crannies of your face. This brush is ideal for applying concealer underneath the eyes, near the nose, or the forehead.

Eyeshadow Brush

Eyeshadow brushes come in a variety of shapes. A fluffier eyeshadow brush works best to apply shadow to the lid and blend it out. Smaller, pointed eyeshadow brushes are perfect for applying eyeshadow into the crease or corners of the eye.

Eyeliner Brush

Most eyeliner brushes are slim and ultra-fine. The type of eyeliner brush I use has an angled edge to create thin, precise lines with a cream or liquid eyeliner.

Brow Brush

Angled brow brushes are ideal for applying all types of brow products (think powders, waxes and pomades). These brushes have a spoolie on the end to groom brows and blend the product once applied.

Lip Brushes

These brushes have a pointed tip to precisely apply lip colour from the tube. A lip brush lets you build the intensity of colour, or to outline and fill-in the lips.

Erin Angela’s Top 4 Eyeshadow Palettes

Hello, lovelies!

Eyeshadow is a staple in my makeup collection. There are certain palettes that I gravitate towards, and create versatile eyeshadow looks with them. Here is a peek into my top four favourite eyeshadow palettes!

1. Anastasia Beverly Hills Soft Glam

The Soft Glam Palette from Anastasia Beverly Hills is an essential palette for neutral, smoky eyeshadow looks. I wear this palette whenever I want to create a soft smoky eye. My favourite shades in this palette are ‘Rose Gold’ and ‘Cyprus Umber’.

2. Urban Decay Born to Run

This is one of the most used palette in my collection. The combination of neutral matte shades, glittery metallics and pops of colour make this a versatile palette for every type of eye makeup look. I wear this palette a few times per week.

3. Huda Beauty Obsessions

I love travelling with my Huda Beauty Obsessions Palette! Though the palette only contains 9 eyeshadows, the orange, brown and burgundy shades enables me to create a variety of looks. I used this palette for an entire week while on vacation last month, and achieved a variety of eyeshadow combinations!

4. Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina

The Norvina Palette is a beautiful, cool-toned eyeshadow palette for the fall and winter seasons. I wear the mauve, lavender and shimmering shades for special occasions and daily events. I often pair the cool-toned shades with bright, bold lipstick shades.

3 Creative Ways to Use Loose Powder in Your Beauty Routine

Hello, lovelies!

Loose powder is a staple in my makeup kit to lock-down my foundation and concealer while preventing oil buildup on my skin. Loose powder comes in various colours but the most common shade is ‘translucent’ as it does not leave any coloured residue on the skin. I apply loose powder during different stages of my beauty routine and here are a few ways that you can use it too!

1. Plump your lashes

Loose powder can amp up the volume of your eyelashes. Dust loose powder over your eyelashes before applying mascara to increase the fluffiness of your mascara. If you apply multiple coats of mascara, dust powder in between each coat for extra fullness.

2. Bake your makeup

I mainly apply loose powder to ‘bake’ my makeup. This technique involves coating a liquid makeup product in powder to set it. To bake my makeup, I dust a heavy amount of powder over my face after applying wet concealer and allow it to set for a few seconds. Once it is set, I dust off the powder. This helps to seal the cream product onto the skin.

3. Increase the longevity of freshly-applied lipstick

This trick works like an extra coat of lip liner. After applying one coat of lipstick, place a tissue over your lips. Dab loose powder over the tissue and press your lips together to enhance the longevity of your lipstick.

Erin Angela’s October 2018 Sephora Haul

Hello, lovelies!

I recently shopped at Sephora after a two-month no-buy period. The purpose of my trip was to replace my holy-grail cleanser but I added a few other surprises to my shopping cart that I’m sharing in today’s blog post!

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray and Complexion Prep Spray Duo

This duo is part of Urban Decay’s holiday collection and features a travel-sized duo of the brand’s All-Nighter Setting Spray and Complexion Prep Primer Spray. I wanted to try Urban Decay’s iconic setting spray for a while now, and instantly loved it after testing it yesterday! This set is great to travel with.

Smashbox Always Sharp Lip Liner

I’ve always used Bite Beauty lip liners but decided to try one from Smashbox after unsuccessfully finding my favourite shade in store. To my surprise, I love this lip liner! It is creamy and long-wearing. I bought the shade Nude Light, which has a beige-pink undertone. I tested it yesterday and my lipstick did not budge for hours!

Tatcha The Deep Cleanse

I repurchased this cleanser from Tatcha. This has been my main skincare product for a few months, and my skin has become clear and smooth. I adore this cleanser as it does not dry out my skin.

Bite Beauty Agave Treat Trio Mini

This mini Agave lip mask set was an impulse buy. This set comes with three mini tubes of Bite Beauty’s Agave Lip Masks in the shades Natural, Maple and Candy Cane. I apply lip masks and balm regularly throughout the fall and winter months and can’t wait to test these out.

Make Up For Ever Artist Rouge Lipstick Sample

I received a lipstick sample from Make Up For Ever. The shade is a beautiful Rose-tones pink. This lipstick is creamy and pairs well with dark or light eyeshadow.

Clinique Moisture Surge Hydrator Sample

I’ve received many samples of Clinique’s Moisture Surge moisturizer before, and adore the soft, supple hydration that the product gives my skin.

REVIEW: Caudalie Instant Detox Mask

Hello, lovelies!

I recently received a sample of the Caudalie Instant Detox Mask from Sephora. While my skincare routine is fairly regimented, I enjoy trying new masks to clarify and detoxify my skin. This mask contains a variety of natural ingredients to clean the pores and reduce excess oil.

The Packaging

This packaging is quite earth-toned and soothing. The mask comes in a mint-green tube that bears the Caudalie logo and a floral design. This tube is lightweight and travel-friendly. My favourite aspect of the packaging is that the mask can be dispensed onto my palm without placing my fingers into the product.

The Mask

The first thing I noticed about this mask was its beautiful pale pink colour. This mask has a gritty texture that feels deep-cleaning when applied to the skin. It contains grape marc to detofixy, pink clay and coffee to absorb dirt and excess oil, and papaya to brighten. These natural ingredients feel soothing and non-irritating on the skin. After using this mask, my skin felt clearer, brighter and smooth.

How to use it

I like to use this mask 1-2 times per week. I apply a thin layer to my skin, leave it on for 5-10 minutes then rinse.

Caudalie’s Instant Detox Mask worked well to clear my skin, and did not feel chalky or tight like other masks I’ve tried. If you’re looking for a soothing mask to add into your skincare routine, I’d recommend this one! Caudalie’s Instant Detox Mask retails for $47 at Sephora.

3 Tips to Effortlessly Apply Liquid Lipstick

Hello, lovelies!

I adore liquid lipstick! The fluid formulas are opaque like traditional lipsticks, but last longer and dry to a matte, transfer-proof finish. Liquid lipstick can be tricky to apply at first, so I’m sharing my favourite tips to help make the application a breeze!

1. Prep your lips

This step is crucial, since most liquid lipsticks are drying. I always like to exfoliate and moisturize my lips before applying a lip liner to ensure that my lipstick has maximum wear.

2. Use less product than you think you need

It is better to start with a small amount of product then add more as needed. This will make it easier to apply additional lipstick without your lips feeling caked or dry.

3. Avoid lip balm

Lip balm tends to breakdown liquid lipstick. Rather than applying lip balm throughout the day, you should apply it during your lip prep.

What are your favourite tips to apply liquid lipstick?

About Me

Florida 2018 Vacation Recap

Hello, lovelies!

I recently travelled to Florida with my boyfriend, Grant. We spent an action-packed week visiting theme parks, shopping and soaking up the sun!

Day 1 – Arrival

Our trip began with an early flight and one layover. The first day involved errands (picking up park passes, snacks/water, etc) and settling into the hotel.

Day 2 – Magic Kingdom

This day was absolutely magical! I’d visited Magic Kingdom once before, but did not get to experience everything in the park due to a recent surgery. We headed to the park early and spent the day exploring rides and 3D animations. I’m a Disney fan at heart and made a special point to meet Cinderella while in the park! This was my favourite day throughout the trip thanks to the full Disney experience.

Day 3 – Shopping

During the first day of shopping, I successfully avoided the Kate Spade store in favour of new dressy clothes from Forever 21, H&M and Roz & Ali.

Day 4 – Hollywood Studios

Walking around Hollywood Studios felt like a scene from a 1950s-era movie! The park itself was adorable, and we viewed attractions from Frozen, Star Wars and Indiana Jones. This action-packed day was entertaining and fun.

Day 5 – Disney Springs

Disney Springs was such a fun place to explore! It is a shopping, dining and entertainment centre located near Epcot. Featured stores include Coach, Anthropologie, and Kiehl’s. I loved browsing the various stores and outdoor plaza areas.

Day 6 – Last Minute Shopping

While I told myself I did not need to shop while in Florida, that didn’t last very long. I bought multiple dresses and blouses, and a new pair of Sketchers. While at the Orlando Premium Outlets, I impulsively decided to buy a new Kate Spade handbag. This bag is a beautiful forest-green tote that will be perfect for the fall and winter seasons! Later in the day, we visited The Cheesecake Factory, located in the upscale Mall of Millenia.

Day 7 – Universal Studios

Returning to Universal Studios was a blast!  I’m usually terrified of heights but decided to try a few roller coaster-like and 3D motion rides (that were both terrifying and adventurous). I visited this theme park previously, but enjoyed this visit far more as I tested more rides and attractions.

Day 8 – Last Day

The last day of our trip involved last-minute errands, and packing. After checking out of the hotel, we headed to the airport for our flight.
