I adore testing mascaras that promise long, fluttery eyelashes. I recently received a sample of Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Mascara from Influenster and instantly fell in love with the product. This is the first mascara that I’ve tried in ages that gave me voluminous, pigmented, and fluttery eyelashes.
The packaging is sleek and sophisticated. The mascara comes in a sleek black tube that features a shiny finish. The tube bears the Marc Jacobs logo and is both lightweight and travel-friendly. I love the unique design of the mascara wand – the bristles are tightly-packed to dispense mascara onto each individual lash. This is the first mascara I’ve used where I’ve effortlessly reached the curved lashes near the corners of my eyes with ease!
I adore the formula of this mascara. It feels thick when applied to the lashes, but it does not become clumped or sticky. The mascara has a rich black pigment and it is not watery. This mascara has a unique formula – it contains the Flash Volume Complex that prevents the mascara from smudging.
I’ve worn this mascara throughout the day and it does not flake, clump, or disappear with wear. One small issue I encountered with this mascara is that the wand occasionally picks up a lot of pigment. As a result, my mascara may apply thickly but it can quickly be thinned out with a tiny amount of water.
If you are looking for a high-end mascara that packs volume, length, and pigment I would recommend Marc Jacob’s Velvet Noir Mascara! Each individual tube retails for $32 at Sephora.
We’ve all had moments where the makeup we just applied has smudged or disappeared completely. There are various ways that you can prevent your skin from becoming shiny, causing makeup to smudge. Here are my top tips:
Prep your skin
Prepping your skin with primer is important for all skin types, as it helps your makeup stay vibrant throughout the day. If your skin gets shiny, you should prime the oiliest areas of your skin with an oil-free primer. Other areas of the skin can be primed with the same product, or a primer that is not oil free, depending on what you prefer!
Apply powder, but don’t overdo it
I often powder my entire face, but I concentrate my powder in on my forehead, cheeks, and chin to eliminate extra oil. Applying a translucent powder will control shine and oil but applying too much product may give your skin a powdery hue. I like to apply a small amount of powder with a fluffy brush before blending it into my skin.
Stick to products that are long-wearing
Products that contain oil or water may contribute to smudged, smeared or slipped makeup. Look for products that are long-wearing, water-resistant, or water-proof to prevent any creasing throughout the day.
Blogging takes time and effort. I’ve learned a few lessons since I began my blog, and have compiled a breakdown of some of things I wish I’d known when I started my blog that I will share with you.
Maintaining social media can be tiring
It takes time and work to maintain various social media accounts. As I write this post, I mentally note that I’ve barely opened my Instagram app in days. I sometimes feel pressure to consistently post on my blog and social media, but it is a good idea to take a break from posting. Consistently posting and preparing content can feel draining and it’s important to acknowledge that it’s okay if you don’t have posts prepared for every day of the week!
Writing about topics that you are passionate about will majorly benefit your blog. If you aren’t passionate about your niche and ideas, you’ll find it difficult to make it as a blogger.
Joining social media groups in your niche will be helpful
I’ve joined multiple Facebook and Twitter groups related to beauty and lifestyle topics since I began my blog. These groups are beneficial for multiple reasons. First, it’s wonderful to have a place where other bloggers share the same ‘language’ as you do. I also adore these groups when I’m stuck for inspiration. Finding new bloggers or content to read is an excellent source of inspiration when you encounter writer’s block.
Huda Beauty recently released a collection of mini eyeshadow palettes in a wide variety of shades. I bought numerous palettes from Sephora and was excited to see how it compared to the brand’s traditional palettes!
The eyeshadow palette is small and travel-friendly. The shadows are enclosed in a compact that includes a square mirror. The outside of the palette contains the Huda Beauty logo and photos of each eyeshadow within the palette. The palette features a matte black colour that pops against the coloured designs on each palette.
The eyeshadow formula is creamy and pigmented. The mattes do not feel chalky or stiff, and the shimmers are bright. The shadows do not flake or crease throughout the day.
The Palette Options
Huda Beauty originally released the Obsessons Palettes in 2017. In September 2018, the brand expanded the collection to include the Precious Stone Obsessions Palettes. The entire collection features 10 palettes. I own the Warm Brown Obsessions and Amethyst Gemstone Obsessions Palette. Other palettes include:
- Gemstone Obsessions – A combination of creamy, metallic and duochrome shadows. This palette features ruby, sapphire and emerald shades.
- Coral Obsessions – A combination of matte and shimmer shades. This palette features bright, warm colours that include hot pink, burnt orange and rust-red.
- Warm Brown Obsessions – Features copper, warm-brown and deep red matte shades.
- Mauve Obsessions – This palette contains a combination of matte and shimmer shadows. This palette features soft plum, violet and dusty rose shades.
- Electric Obsessions – Features bold matte and shimmer shadows in shades that include hot pink, bright yellow and teal.
- Smoky Obsessions – A combination of matte and metallic shadows. The shades include carbon-black, shimmering gold, and silver.
- Amethyst Obsessions – A combination of matte and metallic shadows that include mauve, sparkling amethyst, and bubblegum pink.
- Topaz Obsessions – A combination of creamy matte and metallic shadows that include tan, orange, turmeric and sparkling gold shades.

- Ruby Obsessions – This palette contains matte and metallic shadows in shades that range from ruby-red to sparkling champagne
- Sapphire Obsessions – A combination of matte and metallic shadows that are mainly blue-toned with pops of silver and lime-green.
If you are looking for a fun, travel-friendly eyeshadow palette I’d highly recommend the Obsessions Palettes from Huda Beauty! Each individual palette retails for $35 at Sephora.
Social media is an effective tool to promote your blog, connect with other bloggers, and expand your readership. I regularly cross-promote my blog on my social media channels and it’s exponentially increased my blog traffic! Here are three effective strategies to promote your blog on social media:
Integrate your blog and social media accounts
Integrating your blog and social media accounts bridges the gap between each platform and your blog. People who are visiting your blog need an easy way to connect with your social media channels, and connecting both accounts ensures that the transition from blog to social media is seamless. I offer links to my Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook on my blog banner, and link my blog on each of my social media accounts.
Join social communities
Facebook, Twitter, and other social media websites are good platforms to promote your blog’s content and connect with other bloggers. If you are new to social media communities, start out by joining conversations with other bloggers before promoting your content.
Update your blog posts regularly
When you share your own content on social media, it’s helpful to repost older blog posts. This is helpful if you have new followers who have not read the posts previously, or if you are planning to revitalize previously-shared content.
Do you have any tips to promote your blog on social media?
The inspiration for this post came while I was sorting through my makeup collection. With summer approaching, I began to consider which items in my collection are travel-friendly and compact. Here’s a list of my favourite beauty products to travel with this season!
1. Tarte Cosmetics Hamptons Weekender Contour Palette
I typically travel with separate blush, contour and highlight compacts. This set is ideal for travel as it contains all three makeup products in a single compact. It is lightweight and small enough to place in my handbag.
2. Huda Beauty Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette
Full-sized eyeshadow palettes can be difficult to travel with. Huda Beauty’s new Obsession Eyeshadow Palettes contain 9 pans of shadow, and a mirror for travel. I love that these eyeshadow compacts are versatile and lightweight.
3. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara Mini
I love packing mini mascara tubes in my makeup bag when I travel. I’ve used mini tubes of Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara for a few months now and they are quick and easy to apply.
4. Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder Mini
Laura Mercier’s iconic setting powder usually comes in a heavy jar. I was delighted to find a travel-sized jar during my latest Sephora trip. This mini version of the powder is small in size, and lighter than the full-sized jar. This is a perfect travel-friendly setting powder if you don’t like travelling with full-sized jars of loose product.
I search for a new fragrance every few months and vary the scents I wear based on the season. I found Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Perfume at Sephora. Upon testing the fragrance, it reminded me of spring. Viktor & Rolf are an Amsterdam-based design team. Flowerbomb is their debut fragrance.
The glass bottle containing the perfume is transparent and octagon-shaped. The perfume is a beautiful pale-pink that is reminiscent of a peony. The geometric pattern on the bottle is fun and unique. The bottle bears the name of the perfume in crisp lettering.
Flowerbomb is a delightful combination of warm, floral notes. The fragrance has hints of jasmine and orange blossom but the scent profile subtly changes as the perfume dries down. The fragrance begins with hints of woodsy bergamot and bright mandarin. As it dries, the fragrance releases notes of amber, jasmine and freesia.
The perfume is long-lasting. It reveals different fragrance notes as it dries down. I enjoy the scent. Floral perfumes are often cloying and overpowering. This one is the opposite – light and mild.
This fragrance is is just one of the company’s perfume sets. Other perfumes available in Viktor & Rolf’s collection include the Bonbon Collection and the Spice Collection. Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb Perfume retails at Sephora for $198.
