I typically only wear liquid eyeliner, but tested Sephora Collection’s Contour Eye Pencil after receiving a sample. This eye pencil is waterproof and delivers intense pigment.
I love that this eye pencil is lightweight. I can easily travel with it, however the cap does not snap closed so I’d suggest being careful when placing this product in your purse! The pencil itself is carbon-black and features the ‘Sephora Collection’ logo. It is sleek, and the product colour is visible.
The formula is silky and resistant to water and heat. It does not feel chalky when applied to my eyelid, and the pencil glides smoothly. Unlike a liquid eyeliner, this one dries instantly. I have not tested the product on my lower lash line, but I was impressed with the 4-5 hour wear time this one gave me when applied to my upper lash line!
Sephora Collection’s Contour Eye Pencil comes in a range of 25 shades. I own the shade “01 – Black Lace” which is a beautiful matte black. Each pencil retails for $10 at Sephora.
A smoky eye can appear tricky to master, but there are a few simple tips you can implement to craft an edgy look. Here are my favourite tips to help you create a perfect smoky eye!
1. Clean up your lines
Applying dark eyeshadow is often messy. To avoid smudging impacting the rest of your makeup, apply your eye makeup first to clean up any fallout. I like to use makeup remover or a Q-tip to clean up my lower lash line after applying eyeshadow.
2. Play with colours
A smoky eye doesn’t have to consist of black or grey eyeshadow. Try experimenting with rich, dark colours like plum, bronze, or brown to elevate your eye makeup.
3. Apply primer to stay smudge-free
Primer is a lifesaver when I create a smoky eye. Applying primer to your eyelids will ensure that dark shadow stays in place, and won’t crease.
What is your favourite tip to create a smoky eye?
If you love makeup, you know that your collection of powders, palettes, and lipstick just grows. It’s important to keep your makeup bags, products, and brushes clean. Check out my favorite tips to spring-clean your makeup collection.
1. Deep clean your makeup brushes
Makeup brushes should be cleaned regularly to avoid product build-up and breakouts. There are multiple techniques you can use to clean brushes – from soap to brush cleaner. I often clean my brushes with Sephora Collection Daily Brush Cleaner. It is an easy product to work with, and all it requires is a spritz of the product onto a towel. Gently rub the towel into your brushes and voila! An important note when cleaning brushes is to ensure they are completely dry after you rinse them.
2. Check the expiration dates
Most products have period-after-opening (PAO) symbol that will indicate how long the product will last. This symbol is found on the back or bottom of the product. If you are unsure of the exact date of expiry, here’s a quick guide to makeup expiration dates:
Foundation + concealer: 2 years
Mascara: 3 months
Eyeshadow: 1-2 years
Eyeliner: 4-6 months
Lipstick: 1 year
3. Re-organize your collection and make products more visible
When reorganizing my products a few weeks ago, I picked up a few items that made me think, “Oh, I forgot about this!” When most of your collection is not visible, it is common to forget about products. It is a good idea to place all products in a single, highly-visible area. I keep my makeup on a shelf that is eye-level, to continuously remind myself of which products I have/have not used recently.
What are your tips for spring-cleaning your makeup collection?
My most recent trip to Sephora involved restocking my makeup essentials. While I browsed, I added a few additional items to my cart. In today’s post, I’ll break down the products I restocked and the new additions to my makeup collection.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Soft Glam Palette
This palette is a perfect combination of subtle earth-toned shades, sparkling rose-gold and matte black eyeshadows. I do not have a set of neutral mattes in my collection. Two initial shades drew me to this palette – a matte carbon-black and a rose gold with an iridescent finish. This palette will be an essential component of my spring makeup! I often do not wear neutral eyeshadow tones, but this will be a perfect place to start.
BareMinerals Matte Liquid Lipcolor Mini
I received a sample of this liquid lipstick from BareMinerals. I always enjoy trying new lipstick formulas to determine how they compare to my favourites. This sample is in the shade Fire. This shade is a beautiful orange-red that is different from shades I typically wear.
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner
My beloved eyeliner lasted me a long time. I have worn the Tattoo Liner formula for the past two years, and knew I would return to this Kat Von D product once my eyeliner dried out. I restocked the eyeliner in the shade Trooper – a crisp, matte black. I actually did not realize my eyeliner was beginning to dry out until I tried the new pen. In comparison to the tube I’ve always used, the new one delivered a bold, crisp line.
What products have you recently purchased from Sephora?
My beloved Kat Von D Tattoo Liner ran out last week. I prefer liquid liners, and scoped my local Sephora for a replacement. I found a waterproof liner from Sephora’s signature collection. It is matte black and waterproof. I was sold.
This eyeliner comes in a triangular container. The brush, slim and pointed, is attached to the cover. Each container of this eyeliner is reflective of its colour.
I tend to favor black eyeliner. This shade is an inky black that dries to a matte finish. It is called Black Lace.
Sephora Collection Waterproof Eyeliner comes in 6 shades:
- Starry Sky – Glitter Black
- Black Lace – Matte Black
- Surfin’ USA – Shimmery Turquoise
- Sailor Kiss – Matte Navy Blue
- Animal Instinct – Glitter Olive Green
- French Riviera – Golden Glitter
I test a waterproof eyeliner bases on how long it lasts without fading. Sephora Collection’s eyeliner wears comfortably for 6-8 hours without requiring a touch-up. It dries onto my lid within a few seconds of applying it.
I often stick to pure black eyeliner. After buying this one, I’m tempted to venture into the colorful shades offered in the collection!
Sephora Collection Colorful Waterproof Eyeliner retails for $7 at Sephora.
The number of steps in my daily makeup routine change with the season. I’ve tried to condense my routine for the warm summer season. While standing in front of my mirror yesterday morning, my boyfriend Grant inspired this post. I can hear him say, “Are you almost ready? What’s that glitter you’re putting on your eyelids?” Today, I’ll reveal exactly what that ‘glitter’ is!
The first step in my makeup routine is cleansing. I apply Fresh Beauty Soy Face Cleanser. This gel cleanser keeps my skin soft and clear of blemishes. I supplement this step with a moisturizer – often Tarte’s Drink of H2O Hydrating Boost Moisturizer.
I simplify the rest of my facial makeup. I’ve used Clinique Acne Solutions Liquid Makeup for the past two years. It is a great medium-coverage foundation that lets my skin breathe. I buff the foundation into my skin using a buffing brush. I dot Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer underneath my eyes and cover any blemishes. I complete my face makeup by sweeping highlighter onto my cheekbones. I switch between different highlighter products, but my current favourite is Anastasia Beverly Hills Aurora Glow Kit. It is luminous, with a beautiful range of colours!
I never apply eyeshadow without priming my lids. My primer of choice is Too Faced Shadow Insurance. I switch between different eyeshadow palettes each day. The palette I use most often is Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance. This palette contains creamy, blendable shadows that range from brick red to glittery gold. I line my waterline with Sephora Collection Waterproof Eyeliner. I complete my eye makeup with a swipe of mascara. My mascara of choice is Smashbox Full Exposure.
I line my lips with Bite Beauty’s Lip Pencil in a nude shade. Selecting a lipstick to wear each day is the hardest aspect of my makeup routine. I swipe on a shade that matches my outfit to complete my makeup.
Below is a before and after comparison of my makeup routine:
Today I share my favourite beauty hacks. I’ve tried each in the past, and they’ve resulted in a fresh take on my beauty routine.
Make your own nail polish topcoat
Combine a teaspoon of cornstarch with your topcoat polish. Apply one coat of this mix to on top of your nail polish to mattify it.
Revive dry face wipes
Some brands of face and makeup remover wipes are dry in texture. To add extra moisture fo the wipes, pour micellar or regular water to them.
Fix a broken lipstick
It is heartbreaking when your favourite lipstick cracks in half. To fix it, use a lighter to melt the bottom of the broken piece. Re-attach this piece to the stick, hold it in place for a second, and place in the fridge for 1 hour.
Apply eyeliner to your eyelash curler to line and curl at the same time
This works best with a kohl liner. Use the liner to draw a line across the edge of your eyeliner where it will touch your lashline. Curl as you normally would to apply.
What are your favourite beauty hacks?
I received a full-sized sample of Smashbox’s Always Sharp Waterproof Kohl Liner during a recent sale at my local drugstore. I’m continuously seeking new eyeliners to test, and was eager to try this one. This eyeliner self-sharpens to glide onto the lid with each use.
This liner did not come with packaging. The eyeliner pencil itself is lightweight and smooth upon application. A clever component of the eyeliner is the self-sharpening cap. Each twist of the lid pushes the kohl tip through the pointed mould inside the cap, sharpening it. I’ve tested this liner to create a winged eyeliner look. I created smooth lines with ease, and the liner maneuvered well across my lid.
The liner is a rich, matte black. Despite the wide range of colour choices, I decided to stick to my trusted black liner. I list the range of shades below:
- Raven – Black
- Storm – Smoky grey
- Sumatra – Brown
- Violetta – Prune
- French Navy – Navy
- Cabana – Green
- Bare – Nude
I enjoy the pigmentation of the liner, and the ease of use. The liner is long-lasting and smudge-resistant. A downside to this eyeliner is the softness of the kohl tip. After two uses, I broke off the sharpened tip, and it was difficult to resharpen.
Smashbox’s Always Sharp Waterproof Kohl Liner retails for $21 from Smashbox’s official website. Sephora sells the liner for $25.
As you will see from some of my previous posts, I am a fan of Kat Von D products. I purchased the Tattoo Liner while searching for an eyeliner that created defined looks. Until I bought this liner, I favoured pencil liners. Once I began using this liner, it became my favourite to use.
I own the liner in the shade TROOPER. This liner is a pure, matte black. The eyeliner itself has a fine tip, making for precise, sharp lines. One of my favourite aspects of this liner is the pen-like design. The lid clicks when closed, and this ensures the liner does not dry out
This liner is available in two shades. TROOPER is a satin black, while MAD MAX BROWN is the colour of chocolate.
Below is an arm swatch of the liner. Upon application, the eyeliner dries to a matte black finish. The liner does not budge once applied, and is the perfect liner to wear during a long day or night. It does not flake or run. Despite this longevity, it does remove using makeup remover.
Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner retails from Kat Von D’s official website for $20. Sephora sells this liner for $25.
Liquid liner tends to last longer, and has a stronger pigment, than other formulas. Liquid liners create a more defined look than pencil or gel. The task of beginning to use liquid liner can be daunting. Today I share tips to help you with liquid liner application.
Use a liner pen. Liquid eyeliner that comes as a pen, such as Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, is an easier place to start. The liner is a similar shape to pencil liners, and this makes them easy to handle and apply. Pen-shaped eyeliners often have a finer tip.
Apply eyeshadow first. If you are applying full eye makeup, applying the eyeshadow first acts as a base. It creates a dry base for the liner to adhere to.
Try using tape as a stencil to keep your hands free. Placing a piece of tape against your lower lash line, extending toward your temple, creates a clean line. This keeps your hands free.
Clean up the line. To erase any smudges, and define the line, soak a cotton ball in makeup remover and gently slide it along the wing. (This post by ELLE Magazine features pictorials to help with liner application.)
