3 Creative Ways to Use Loose Powder in Your Beauty Routine

Hello, lovelies!

Loose powder is a staple in my makeup kit to lock-down my foundation and concealer while preventing oil buildup on my skin. Loose powder comes in various colours but the most common shade is ‘translucent’ as it does not leave any coloured residue on the skin. I apply loose powder during different stages of my beauty routine and here are a few ways that you can use it too!

1. Plump your lashes

Loose powder can amp up the volume of your eyelashes. Dust loose powder over your eyelashes before applying mascara to increase the fluffiness of your mascara. If you apply multiple coats of mascara, dust powder in between each coat for extra fullness.

2. Bake your makeup

I mainly apply loose powder to ‘bake’ my makeup. This technique involves coating a liquid makeup product in powder to set it. To bake my makeup, I dust a heavy amount of powder over my face after applying wet concealer and allow it to set for a few seconds. Once it is set, I dust off the powder. This helps to seal the cream product onto the skin.

3. Increase the longevity of freshly-applied lipstick

This trick works like an extra coat of lip liner. After applying one coat of lipstick, place a tissue over your lips. Dab loose powder over the tissue and press your lips together to enhance the longevity of your lipstick.

REVIEW: Caudalie Instant Detox Mask

Hello, lovelies!

I recently received a sample of the Caudalie Instant Detox Mask from Sephora. While my skincare routine is fairly regimented, I enjoy trying new masks to clarify and detoxify my skin. This mask contains a variety of natural ingredients to clean the pores and reduce excess oil.

The Packaging

This packaging is quite earth-toned and soothing. The mask comes in a mint-green tube that bears the Caudalie logo and a floral design. This tube is lightweight and travel-friendly. My favourite aspect of the packaging is that the mask can be dispensed onto my palm without placing my fingers into the product.

The Mask

The first thing I noticed about this mask was its beautiful pale pink colour. This mask has a gritty texture that feels deep-cleaning when applied to the skin. It contains grape marc to detofixy, pink clay and coffee to absorb dirt and excess oil, and papaya to brighten. These natural ingredients feel soothing and non-irritating on the skin. After using this mask, my skin felt clearer, brighter and smooth.

How to use it

I like to use this mask 1-2 times per week. I apply a thin layer to my skin, leave it on for 5-10 minutes then rinse.

Caudalie’s Instant Detox Mask worked well to clear my skin, and did not feel chalky or tight like other masks I’ve tried. If you’re looking for a soothing mask to add into your skincare routine, I’d recommend this one! Caudalie’s Instant Detox Mask retails for $47 at Sephora.

REVIEW: Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Hello, lovelies!

I bought a travel-sized jar of Laura Mercier’s iconic setting powder at Sephora during the summer. After only one use, this powder became a staple in my makeup kit when setting my makeup! This is the first loose setting powder I’ve tried, and I was interested to see how it performed compared to alternatives!

The Packaging

The packaging feels luxurious. The powder comes in a rounded jar that has small openings in the top to dispense the powder. The oak-brown lid contains the Laura Mercier logo. I love this packaging design – the powder dispenses easily and precisely.

The Powder

This powder is incredible. It is translucent, and is not scented or coloured – perfect for my acne prone skin! It is finely-milled and feels soft when blended into the skin. It does not feel heavy on the skin and sets my makeup for the day.

The Wear

This powder wears comfortably throughout the day. It feels weightless on the skin, and doesn’t crease. I’ve worn it comfortably for 12-14 hours without experiencing any fallout or fading.

If you are looking for a translucent setting powder to set makeup (especially foundation!) I’d recommend Laura Mercier’s Translucent Setting Powder. It retails for $48 at Sephora,

3 Travel-Friendly Beauty Tips You Need to Know

Hello, lovelies!

Before I returned from my Florida vacation this week, I implemented travel-friendly beauty tips into my routine to make travel a breeze! Here are a few tips to maintain gorgeous hair, skin and makeup while travelling:

1. Streamline your makeup

Minimizing the amount of products you travel with will maximize space in your carry-on bag or suitcase. One way to streamline your makeup products is to find products that are multi-purpose or travel-sized. My favourite products include Tarte’s Hampton Weekender Palette and a travel-sized haircare set.

2. Keep your skin calm

It can be tempting to try the fancy products provided by your hotel, but sticking to your normal skincare routine will ensure your skin stays calm and fresh.

3. Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is important when your on an airplane or in a warm destination. Airplane cabins are pressurized, which can reduce the humidity levels onboard. This can lead to dehydration, so I try to drink a lot of water while flying.

Hello, lovelies!

I received a sample of MAC’s Prep+Prime Skin Base with purchase over the summer, and I was very excited to try a gel lotion primer. This product is a unique lotion that evens out skin redness and discolouration while adding radiance. I replaced my moisturizer and primer with this product to test it and loved the results!

The Packaging

This product is sleek and lightweight. The product is packaged inside a bottle that mimics an aerosol can, however the nozzle functions similar to a pump. It features the MAC logo and contains 30 ml of product. My favourite aspect of the packaging is the multi-coloured shimmering particles on the bottle that results in a glittering effect when the bottle is turned.

The Product

The primer itself is white but has small golden flecks in it. It feels very lightweight and soft when applied to the skin, drying down without feeling sticky. This primer gave my skin a luminous glow underneath my makeup.

I like that this product is easy to apply and dries down quickly. To apply, smooth the product over your face after moisturizing. The product can be applied with the fingertips, a brush, or a sponge.

3 Mistakes You Didn’t Know You Were Making with Makeup Wipes

Hello, lovelies!

Makeup remover wipes are ideal for removing makeup in a pinch, but did you know that you might be using them incorrectly? I like to use makeup remover wipes to remove the initial layer of makeup on my skin, but I’ve learned a few little tricks that might be reducing the effectiveness of the beloved makeup wipe!

Relying solely on a makeup wipe to remove all your makeup

We all know that removing makeup at the end of each day is important. How do you remove your makeup? If you’re using just a makeup wipe to remove everything, you may be leaving residual makeup on your skin. A makeup remover wipe works well in a pinch but it doesn’t effectively breakdown makeup enough to cleanse the skin. I notice this whenever I use makeup wipes, and typically have to wash my face immediately after to remove all my makeup.

Letting the wipes dry out

Makeup remover wipes are pre-moistened. If you leave the wipes exposed to air, there’s a chance that the wipes will dry out and won’t be as effective. Ensure that you firmly seal the package after removing a wipe to prevent the entire package from losing moisture.

Wiping the skin too hard

A big misconception about makeup wipes is that the harder you scrub your skin, the more makeup you’ll remove. It doesn’t take aggressive scrubbing to remove makeup fully and you may end up irritating the skin instead. I like to gently swipe the wipe across my skin in a light buffing motion.

What is your favourite way to remove makeup? Do you like or dislike makeup remover wipes?

3 Tips to Effortlessly Apply Foundation

Hello, lovelies!

A smooth, flawless base sets the groundwork for blush, bronzer, and highlighter application. Foundation can be applied with a variety of tools or in different ways, but here are my top tips to achieve perfect foundation!

1. Prep your skin

Preparing your skin before applying foundation will help the product apply smoothly and increase the wear time of your products. Cleansing and moisturizing the skin before applying foundation will remove dirt and oil, and it will hydrate the skin.

2. Set foundation with a powder

Setting my foundation with a translucent powder is the main way that I increase the longevity of the product once I apply it. Most liquid foundations wear for 2-3 hours before natural oils start to breakdown the product, but setting foundation with a powder will prevent this and reduce any shine.

3. Stipple the product into your skin

Stippling foundation means gently tapping it into your skin, instead of rubbing. This can be done with a brush or fingertips but this technique will help the product bond seamlessly with your skin. My favourite stippling technique is to warm the foundation on my skin, apply it to a brush, then gently press it into my skin using tapping and rolling motions.

REVIEW: Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Hello, lovelies!

I typically set my makeup with a setting spray, but wanted to try a setting powder to use on areas of my face that become oily throughout the day. I picked up a travel-sized container of Laura Mercier’s iconic Loose Setting Powder. After only one use, it became a staple in my makeup kit!

The Packaging

The packaging is sleek and sophisticated. The powder is held in a circular jar with small holes vented in the cover to dispense the powder. The jar is embossed with a cedar-coloured cover that bears the ‘Laura Mercier’ logo. The jar feels slightly heavy, which makes the product feel luxurious. Each jar comes with a small, soft puff to apply the powder.

The Powder

The powder feels like a dream when applied to the skin! It is finely-milled and silky to the touch. It blends into the skin seamlessly and does not leave any residue when applied. The powder becomes translucent when blended into the skin and does not appear caky or dry.

How to use it

I like to apply this powder with a fluffy brush. I dip a brush into the small vented holes in the cover, and shake slightly to dispense the product. I sweep it into my skin and blend to set my makeup. If you are new to loose setting powder, I’d recommend tapping off excess powder from your brush or puff then pressing it into the skin using a soft rolling motion.

Laura Mercier’s Loose Setting Powder is a wonderful product to set makeup, reduce shine, and ‘baking’ foundation underneath the eyes. This is my favourite setting powder to use on a daily basis. Laura Mercier’s Translucent Loose Setting Powder retails for $48 at Sephora.

3 Essential Tips to Properly Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Hello, lovelies!

Are you guilty of neglecting to clean your makeup brushes regularly? Keeping your brushes clean is a great way to prevent product build-up and maintain clearer skin. Here are three tips you should know when cleaning your brushes!

1. Disinfect

Spritzing an anti-bacterial spray onto your brushes will eliminate bacteria and it will dry quickly. This is a simple method if you are pressed for time! Simply spray your brushes and let them dry.

2. Clean them regularly

I like to use a daily brush cleanser after every use, and deep-clean each brush once a week. This is especially important if your brushes are exposed to air for long periods of time. I gently clean my brushes daily with a daily cleaning spray, and deep clean them weekly with a gentle soap.

3. Reintroduce softness into your brushes

Sometimes brushes can become hard and flat after cleaning. Introduce a dab of conditioner into the bristles of the brush to keep them soft and smooth.

REVIEW: Tarte Cosmetics Creaseless Concealer

Hello, lovelies!

When my beloved Nars Concealer ran dry, I wanted to try a new brand of concealer. I’ve wanted to try Tarte Cosmetics Shape Tape Concealer for a long time but it’s never been available at Sephora. When Sephora recently began to carry a the new Tarte Cosmetics Creaseless Concealer I was excited to try it! I’ve been using the ‘creaseless’ concealer every day since I bought it, and the product absolutely lives up to its name!

The Packaging

I love the colour scheme and design of this concealer’s packaging. The outside of the concealer features a purple cover with a gorgeous metallic and pink design. The concealer itself comes in a long, cylindrical tube that has a doe-foot applicator. It is lightweight and travel-friendly.

The Formula

This concealer is full-coverage and long-wearing. It feels creamy and slightly sticky when first applied to the skin, but once it dries, it feels weightless on the skin. The concealer does not cake onto the skin and blends without leaving patches. The formula is water-proof, which makes it ideal to use on warm summer days! This concealer wears comfortably throughout the day and doesn’t budge until I remove it with a makeup remover.

The Shades

Tarte’s Creaseless Concealer is available in a range of 30 shades. I own the shade 10B which is a fair beige with cool undertones.

Tarte’s Creaseless Concealer is a great product if you’re looking for a concealer that is full-coverage, waterproof and lightweight. It retails for $32 at Sephora.
