If you love makeup, you know that your collection of powders, palettes, and lipstick just grows. It’s important to keep your makeup bags, products, and brushes clean. Check out my favorite tips to spring-clean your makeup collection.
1. Deep clean your makeup brushes
Makeup brushes should be cleaned regularly to avoid product build-up and breakouts. There are multiple techniques you can use to clean brushes – from soap to brush cleaner. I often clean my brushes with Sephora Collection Daily Brush Cleaner. It is an easy product to work with, and all it requires is a spritz of the product onto a towel. Gently rub the towel into your brushes and voila! An important note when cleaning brushes is to ensure they are completely dry after you rinse them.
2. Check the expiration dates
Most products have period-after-opening (PAO) symbol that will indicate how long the product will last. This symbol is found on the back or bottom of the product. If you are unsure of the exact date of expiry, here’s a quick guide to makeup expiration dates:
Foundation + concealer: 2 years
Mascara: 3 months
Eyeshadow: 1-2 years
Eyeliner: 4-6 months
Lipstick: 1 year
3. Re-organize your collection and make products more visible
When reorganizing my products a few weeks ago, I picked up a few items that made me think, “Oh, I forgot about this!” When most of your collection is not visible, it is common to forget about products. It is a good idea to place all products in a single, highly-visible area. I keep my makeup on a shelf that is eye-level, to continuously remind myself of which products I have/have not used recently.
What are your tips for spring-cleaning your makeup collection?
My skincare routine changes all the time. When I used the last of my go-to face cleanser, I searched for a new product that is gentle but effective. I bought this one-step face cleanser from Philosophy and instantly loved it.
What is it?
A 3-in-1 facial cleanser that cleanses, hydrates and removes makeup.
This cleanser comes in a transparent bottle with a black lid. It is lightweight and simplistic. The transparent bottle displays the cream-colored cleanser inside. The written text on the bottle features the product name (Purity Made Simple) and a brief description of the brand.
I’ll admit – I was skeptical to use this cleanser. I often notice that pure cleansers do not clear my skin well, but this one did not disappoint. The cleanser has a gel consistency that gently lathers when dispensed onto your palm. It gently removes excess oil and makeup without stripping the skin of moisture. After I rinsed the cleanser off my face, my skin immediately felt softer and looked clearer.
The cleanser has a delightful, light citrus scent, thanks to the glycerin and meadowfoam seed oil. It is refreshing and clean.
How to use it
One aspect of this cleanser that I love is how easy it is to use. Simply wet your skin, apply the cleanser using circular motions then rinse. A little product goes a long way when using this cleanser. I typically use a quarter-sized amount each morning.
I’ve used this cleanser daily for the past 2 weeks, and have noticed an improvement in my skin. It prevents breakouts while maintaining my skin’s natural moisture.
Philosophy’s Purity cleanser retails for $32 at Sephora.
If you’re prone to sleeping past your alarm, you may feel that you don’t have enough time to engage in your regular beauty routine each morning. If pressed for time in the morning, I like to make changes to my routine. Here are a few simple tips you can use to simplify your beauty routine in the AM:
1. Highlight and contour in one step
To highlight your face, apply concealer in a “3” motion. Using a concealer that is lighter than your skin tone, draw the top line above your browbone, the middle line above your cheekbones, and bottom line right above your jawline. To contour your face, apply bronzer in a backward “3” motion. Blend the highlight and contour together for a seamless finish.
2. Moisturize while you sleep
If your skin is feeling extra dry, apply your moisturizer before bed. Applying moisturizer before bed allows the lotion to absorb into your skin, and it eliminates one step from your morning.
3. Simplify your makeup routine
I enjoy applying makeup each morning, but sometimes there just isn’t time. Pick 3-4 products that you use daily, and apply those each morning. I often use concealer, mascara, and a red lipstick for a simple, easy makeup look.
How do you simplify your beauty routine during a busy morning?
One of my skin care resolutions for this year is to consistently apply moisturizer. I received a sample of Tatcha’s Water Cream Moisturizer and was eager to try it on my dry winter skin.
What is it?
This moisturizer is an oil-free water cream. It releases skin-improving Japanese nutrients and botanicals for a hydrated complexion.
The product comes in a gorgeous pale-blue container. It features the Tatcha logo in luxurious gold-writing. A gold-coloured bow sits atop the cover.
It is a lightweight, creamy moisturizer. When applied to the skin, the product dries quickly without leaving a residue. The moisturizer smells faintly of Jasmine and fresh roses.
How to use it
Gently massage the cream into the skin on your face and neck.
Tatcha’s The Water Cream is a soothing, creamy moisturizer. It retails for $82 at Sephora.
I’ve tried many different products and samples to maintain clear skin. Some products were ineffective, while others stopped working once my skin acclimatized to them. The products I currently use are soothing on my sensitive skin while still effective for breakouts.
1. Tarte Cosmetics Deep Dive Cleansing Gel
This brightening gel cleanser from Tarte is gentle enough to use daily to cleanse and reduce breakouts. It does not foam or leave any residue, which keeps my skin clear without clogging my pores. This cleanser is the main product I apply as part of my skin care routine.
2. GlamGlow Super Mud Clearing Treatment
I like to apply a heavy-duty cleanser once a week. GlamGlow’s Super Mud Clearing Treatment is a thicker mud mask that minimizes pores while maintaining the skin’s natural moisture. It contains active charcoal and salylic acid to lift away dirt and other skin-clogging debris. This mask refreshes my skin and decreases any blemishes I may have.
3. Clarins SOS Hydra Refreshing Hydration Mask
One skincare product I don’t use diligently is a moisturizer. On days when my skin is dry and just needs extra moisture, I apply this hydration mask from Clarins. It is a cooling, cream-gel mask that delivers hydration. While it does not cleanse or brighten my skin, it effectively hydrates and refreshes my skin. If my skin appears drier or dull this mask is the perfect product to introduce more moisture into my skin.

Blush is one item that I’ve worn a lot this season. My go-to blush is Anastasia Beverly Hills Blush Trio in the shade Pool Party. This blush palette gives my skin the perfect hint of pink.
The blushes come in a sturdy, weighted compact. This design makes the blushes travel-friendly and easy to mix-and-match. I adore the sleek design of the palette, which features the ABH logo and a shiny black finish.
The blush texture is soft, smooth and not chalky. The blush applies creamy but remains dry. Each colour is buildable and allows you to apply a lighter or darker shade.
I own the Pink Passion palette. This palette features peach and pink blushes. The three colours in this palette are:
- Basically – Orchid pink
- Sugar – Bubblegum pink
- Rose – Petal pink
Overall, this trio of blushes is a great product if you’re looking for a lightweight, pigmented blush. Anastasia Beverly Hills Blush Trio retails at Sephora for $30.
Adding highlighter to your face is transformative. Whether you prefer a cream, powder, or liquid formula, a good highlighter adds dimension and luminescence to your skin. While a range of highlighter products exist, not every product will suit all skin tones. Here are my top tips to help you select a highlighter based on your skin tone:
1. Know your skin’s undertones
The most flattering highlight shade is one that is slightly lighter than your skin tone. You can either choose a color that is harmonious with your skin tone, or one that is the opposite. A harmonious highlight shade will create a more natural look, while an opposite colour will create a dramatic effect.
2. Mix it up
If you just can’t seem to find the perfect shade for you, try mixing highlighter into your foundation. This trick will give the skin a natural, subtle radiance that is not overly sparkly. Blend equal parts of your foundation and highlight before applying it to the skin to achieve a flawless complexion.
3. Try before you buy
A good rule of thumb when buying any highlighter is to try it in-store first. Testing a specific shade before buying it will give you an indication of how the colour will appear on your skin.
Welcome to the last few days of 2017! I bought a range of new makeup and skincare products throughout the year. While it was difficult to narrow down, today I’ll share my top four products of 2017.
1. Huda Beauty Desert Dusk Palette
This palette was my favourite eyeshadow to use this year. The matte, shimmer and pure glitter shades made this palette very versatile. I adore the range of colours – from shimmering champagne to burnt orange with pops of purple. This palette enabled me to effortlessly create an everyday eyeshadow look or a glittery smoky eye.
2. Beauty Blender Sponge
I sacrificed two BeautyBlender sponges this year. The small, pointed sponges became a staple in my makeup kit to apply face makeup. I adored my BeautyBlender this year because it is portable, easy to clean and is a quick tool to use daily.
3. MAC Fix+
My MAC Fix+ spray kept my makeup looking flawless all year. This light, refreshing mist solidified my daily makeup and I used it religiously. This spray also became a versatile mist to dampen brushes.
4. GlamGlow Super Mud Clearing Treatment
I spent most of the year testing different skincare products. My skin is acne-prone and I’ve tried a lot of products before I found a routine that works for me. I discovered GlamGlow’s Super Mud mask collection in October and it has dramatically cleared my breakouts. The mask became a perfect addition to my skincare routine this fall/winter.
What were your favourite makeup and skincare products to use in 2017?
I enjoy using face masks 1-2 times per week to supplement my skin care routine. GlamGlow’s Super Mud Clearing Treatment is a mask that is fully effective for clearing my pores and minimizing breakouts. I initially received a sample of the product, but later returned to Sephora for a larger container.
This mask comes in a starry, white and silver jar. The reflective surface is fun and aesthetically-pleasing. It features the GlamGlow logo and a description of the jar’s contents.
I love how this mask works! When first applied to the face, it is sticky and retains the texture of a charcoal mask. As it dries, the texture changes to a clay. It does not fully transform into a clay texture – any black patches that remain are areas where the mask works to clear excess oil!
How to use it
I gently clean my skin before I apply the mask. I apply it to moist skin and leave it on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with warm water. An important thing to note about this mask is that if you have sensitive skin, your skin may appear quite red after the mask is initially rinsed. My skin appeared red and blotchy for a few moments after I rinsed the mask, but it quickly calmed to leave my skin soft and clear!
GlamGlow’s SuperMud Clearing Treatment is a great product if you’re looking for a mask to clear and soothe acne. I incorporated it into my weekly routine about 1-2 months ago and noticed results within the first week of use.
This mask retails for $69 at Sephora. It is also available in a travel-sized container for $24.
This season has brought me many things, but consistently clear skin is not one of those things. The state of my skin changes a lot and I’ve modified my skin care routine in response. (I’m currently sitting at my laptop with a charcoal mask smoothed across my face). Today I’m sharing why you need a dedicated skin care routine, and how you can make changes if your routine is just not working.
Why maintain a skin care routine?
Your hormone levels begin regulating between ages 22-25, but you may notice extra breakouts during certain times of the month. Engaging in a consistent skin care routine is beneficial for many reasons:
- The amount of collagen in your skin decreases in your late-20s and your skin’s barrier begins to thin. Sticking to a regular skincare routine ensures your skin continues to look youthful and radiant
- Your skin is a large barrier. It continuously protects you from toxins and other environmental effects. By engaging in a consistent routine, you’re helping your skin function at its best.
- With time, your skincare routine becomes a habit.
A few simple tips to help you maintain a skin care routine:
Developing and maintaining a skin care routine doesn’t have to be hard work! Here are a few of my favourite tips to regulate my daily and weekly cleansing:
- Use a moisturizer – A good moisturizer will keep your skin looking fresh and supple. Moisturizer protects your skin against wrinkles and reduces dryness.
- Exfoliate – Exfoliation rids the skin of dead skin cells which prevents the skin from appearing dry and dull
