3 Tips to Help You Choose the Best Highlighter for Your Skintone

Hello, lovelies!

Adding highlighter to your face is transformative. Whether you prefer a cream, powder, or liquid formula, a good highlighter adds dimension and luminescence to your skin. While a range of highlighter products exist, not every product will suit all skin tones. Here are my top tips to help you select a highlighter based on your skin tone:

1. Know your skin’s undertones

The most flattering highlight shade is one that is slightly lighter than your skin tone. You can either choose a color that is harmonious with your skin tone, or one that is the opposite. A harmonious highlight shade will create a more natural look, while an opposite colour will create a dramatic effect.

2. Mix it up

If you just can’t seem to find the perfect shade for you, try mixing highlighter into your foundation. This trick will give the skin a natural, subtle radiance that is not overly sparkly. Blend equal parts of your foundation and highlight before applying it to the skin to achieve a flawless complexion.

3. Try before you buy

A good rule of thumb when buying any highlighter is to try it in-store first. Testing a specific shade before buying it will give you an indication of how the colour will appear on your skin.

My Top Beauty Buys of 2017

Hello, lovelies!

Welcome to the last few days of 2017! I bought a range of new makeup and skincare products throughout the year. While it was difficult to narrow down, today I’ll share my top four products of 2017.

1. Huda Beauty Desert Dusk Palette

This palette was my favourite eyeshadow to use this year. The matte, shimmer and pure glitter shades made this palette very versatile. I adore the range of colours – from shimmering champagne to burnt orange with pops of purple. This palette enabled me to effortlessly create an everyday eyeshadow look or a glittery smoky eye.

2. Beauty Blender Sponge

I sacrificed two BeautyBlender sponges this year. The small, pointed sponges became a staple in my makeup kit to apply face makeup. I adored my BeautyBlender this year because it is portable, easy to clean and is a quick tool to use daily.

3. MAC Fix+

My MAC Fix+ spray kept my makeup looking flawless all year. This light, refreshing mist solidified my daily makeup and I used it religiously. This spray also became a versatile mist to dampen brushes.

4. GlamGlow Super Mud Clearing Treatment

I spent most of the year testing different skincare products. My skin is acne-prone and I’ve tried a lot of products before I found a routine that works for me. I discovered GlamGlow’s Super Mud mask collection in October and it has dramatically cleared my breakouts. The mask became a perfect addition to my skincare routine this fall/winter.

What were your favourite makeup and skincare products to use in 2017?

REVIEW: GlamGlow Super Mud Clearing Treatment Mask

Hello, lovelies!

I enjoy using face masks 1-2 times per week to supplement my skin care routine. GlamGlow’s Super Mud Clearing Treatment is a mask that is fully effective for clearing my pores and minimizing breakouts. I initially received a sample of the product, but later returned to Sephora for a larger container.

The Packaging

This mask comes in a starry, white and silver jar. The reflective surface is fun and aesthetically-pleasing. It features the GlamGlow logo and a description of the jar’s contents.

The Mask

I love how this mask works! When first applied to the face, it is sticky and retains the texture of a charcoal mask. As it dries, the texture changes to a clay. It does not fully transform into a clay texture – any black patches that remain are areas where the mask works to clear excess oil!

How to use it

I gently clean my skin before I apply the mask. I apply it to moist skin and leave it on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with warm water. An important thing to note about this mask is that if you have sensitive skin, your skin may appear quite red after the mask is initially rinsed. My skin appeared red and blotchy for a few moments after I rinsed the mask, but it quickly calmed to leave my skin soft and clear!

GlamGlow’s SuperMud Clearing Treatment is a great product if you’re looking for a mask to clear and soothe acne. I incorporated it into my weekly routine about 1-2 months ago and noticed results within the first week of use.

This mask retails for $69 at Sephora. It is also available in a travel-sized container for $24.

The Importance of Maintaining a Consistent Skincare Routine in Your 20s

Hello, lovelies!

This season has brought me many things, but consistently clear skin is not one of those things. The state of my skin changes a lot and I’ve modified my skin care routine in response. (I’m currently sitting at my laptop with a charcoal mask smoothed across my face). Today I’m sharing why you need a dedicated skin care routine, and how you can make changes if your routine is just not working.

Why maintain a skin care routine?

Your hormone levels begin regulating between ages 22-25, but you may notice extra breakouts during certain times of the month. Engaging in a consistent skin care routine is beneficial for many reasons:

  • The amount of collagen in your skin decreases in your late-20s and your skin’s barrier begins to thin. Sticking to a regular skincare routine ensures your skin continues to look youthful and radiant
  • Your skin is a large barrier. It continuously protects you from toxins and other environmental effects. By engaging in a consistent routine, you’re helping your skin function at its best.
  • With time, your skincare routine becomes a habit.

A few simple tips to help you maintain a skin care routine:

Developing and maintaining a skin care routine doesn’t have to be hard work! Here are a few of my favourite tips to regulate my daily and weekly cleansing:

  1. Use a moisturizer – A good moisturizer will keep your skin looking fresh and supple. Moisturizer protects your skin against wrinkles and reduces dryness.
  2. Exfoliate – Exfoliation rids the skin of dead skin cells which prevents the skin from appearing dry and dull

3 Natural Ways to Remove Makeup At the End of the Day

Hello, lovelies!

If you want to wake up with clear skin, removing makeup the night before is essential. I use a variety of methods and products to remove my makeup. When I do not have a makeup remover on hand I substitute natural methods for my beloved remover. Here are 3 methods I rotate between:

1. Use coconut oil

Coconut oil has a range of benefits for your hair, skin, and nails. Combining coconut oil with a soft facial cloth is a quick way to remove stubborn makeup. Apply a small amount of coconut oil to your fingertips and gently rub your face to melt makeup.

2. Combine honey and baking soda

This simple combination acts as both a makeup remover and a cleanser. Start by adding a small amount of baking soda to raw honey. Add a few drops of essential oil and whip the mixture until it forms a paste. Apply with a facecloth, and you have a gentle, effective makeup remover!

3. Use chapstick

This method may surprise you. Chapstick is an effective eye makeup remover. Swipe a small amount of chapstick onto your eyelid or underneath and gently rub it in with a cotton ball to remove makeup residue.

REVIEW: Beauty Blender Makeup Sponge

Hello, lovelies!

I love my Beauty Blender. This palm-sized, pointed sponge is the perfect tool to apply makeup. I use it daily to apply liquid foundation, concealer, and blush.

The Packaging

The sponge comes in a circular, lightweight plastic case. This is an ideal package to transport my Beauty Blender sponge. I also store it in the package to keep it clean.

The Sponge

This sponge is egg shaped, with a rounded base and pointed tip. It has a soft, pliable texture. The Beauty Blender I own is black and fits in my palm, but it comes in a range of colours and sizes.

How to use it?

My favorite aspect of a Beauty Blender is its versatility. The wider side of the sponge is ideal to use on larger areas of the face like the forehead, while the pointed end is percise for under the eyes, and nose. The tool can be used wet or dry. Simply run it under water, if using wet, squeeze the excess water, and apply makeup to the sponge. Dab the sponge onto the face to apply your product of choice in a patting motion.

This is a versatile, easy to use tool to add into your makeup kit. The tool needs cleaning often, but a simple combination of soap/water will keep your sponge in top shape!

Sephora sells the Beauty Blender in various sizes and colours. I own the Beauty Blender Pro, which retails for $28 on Sephora’s official website.

3 Key Tips for Treating Acne-Prone Skin

Hello, lovelies!

I spent a lot of time switching up my skincare routine until finding what works. I still experience breakouts, albeit less frequently than before. I often research new tips and methods to care for my skin. I’ve narrowed down my tips to the ones you’ll see in today’s post. Keep reading to find out the tips I use daily to care for acne-prone skin.

1. AVOID HARSH EXFOLIATION

Exfoliation may seem like the perfect way to cleanse, but for acne-prone skin, it is too harsh. Use your fingertips to massage your cleanser into the skin gently. Avoid cleansers with ingredients like beads or ones with high alcohol contents. These types of cleansers are drying. As a good rule of thumb, pat the skin dry instead of scrubbing.

2. CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES

I’m guilty of not cleaning my brushes as often as I should. Makeup brushes harbor bacteria that contributes to breakouts. You should wash brushes every 2 weeks, and sponges every week.

3. BOOST YOUR SKIN’S HYDRATION

Hydrating the skin is important. Your skin tends to lose moisture when you use exfoliating products, which contributes to breakouts. Boost the hydration in your skin by adding a water-based serum into your daily routine.
