REVIEW: Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara

Hello, lovelies!

I rotate through my mascaras with each season, favoring waterproof in the summer. Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara is multi-functional – it is waterproof, volumizing, and lengthens. I initially bought a sample of this mascara from my local drugstore. I later purchased the full-sized tube at Sephora.

The Packaging

The mascara tube is a classic black, with the Smashbox logo engraved on it. The wand is triangular with fluffy fibers. This shape helps add volume and length.

The Mascara

I adore the mascara formula. It does not crumble or flake on my lashes. The mascara adds volume with a single swipe.

The Colour

I own the colour “Jet Black”. The mascara appears glossy black in the tube. When I apply it to my lashes, it dries to a bold, matte finish.
Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara retails at Sephora for $23.

Clarins Double-Fix Mascara

Hello, lovelies!
I bought a kit filled with mascara samples from my local drugstore last month. It contained mascaras from brands including Lancome, Smashbox, and Clarins. Double Fix Mascara is the first product I’ve tried from the Clarins brand. This unique mascara contains a double-use topcoat for lashes.
The Packaging

This mascara features a multicoloured tube. The wand is attached to a red-chrome cylinder while the product is contained in a white cylinder. Most mascara packages are black, so this colour combination offers a nice contrast.

The Mascara

Why is the mascara called double-fix? The mascara is both a top-coat mascara and regular mascara. The unique topcoat waterproofs eyelashes for mascara application. One portion of the cylinder contains a black mascara. The waterproof portion of the product is a clear, mess-free gel.
This mascara is waterproof and does not smudge. I wore it for 8-9 hours last week, and to my delight, it still appeared freshly-applied!

Clarins Double Fix Mascara retails for $35 at Nordstrom.

Tips and tricks

A Complete Guide to Makeup Expiration Dates, and Why You Need to Toss Expired Products ASAP

Hello, lovelies!

Have you been clinging onto your favourite mascara longer than you should? All makeup expires. The expiry date depends on how the product is stored, when it was opened, and the packaging.

Most moisturizers last about a year. If you notice any discolouration or separation before the year passes, you should discard the product.

Concealers use oils and hydrating agents (e.g. Shea butter) to achieve the silky, smooth texture. A concealer typically lasts for a year. If the concealer dries out, becomes cakey, or changes texture you should throw it out. Despite the products purpose of concealing breakouts, using an expired one can make breakouts worse.

The type of foundation you use affects the expiration date. A powder, liquid, and cream foundation each have different lifespans. Liquid and cream formulas last between 6-12 months. Powders can last up to 2 years.

Powder and blush

Most powders/blushes last two years. To prevent contamination, you should clean your makeup tools regularly. You should never leave the product exposed to air. To prevent this, close the lid tightly.

Brow Pencil

A brow pencil lasts about 2 years. You should sharpen the pencil regularly to keep it in good condition. Closing the cap tightly after use will also prevent any breakage or bacteria.

Eyeshadows last between 6 months and 2 years, depending on the formula. Cream shadows contain hydrating agents that provide moisture. These shadows last about 6 months. Powder shadows can last up to 2 years.

Mascaras have a short shelf-life, approximately 4-6 months. Pumping your mascara wand forces air into the tube, drying out the product. Try slowly moving the wand in a circular motion into the tube for full coverage.

The lifespan of eyeliner is between 4 months and a year. Liquid eyeliners last between 4-6 months as it is more susceptible to contamination. You should discard an eyeliner if you notice any change in texture, colour, or smell. Pencil eyeliners can last up to 2 years.

Most lipsticks last up to 2 years. To care for a lipstick, you should use a lip brush when possible to avoid unnecessary contact with your skin. It is also a good idea to occasionally remove the top layer of product with a makeup wipe.

REVIEW: MAC Zoom Lash Mascara

Hello, lovelies!

When feeling adventurous I deviate from my typical colour choices. The same goes for mascara. I often swipe a coat or two of black mascara on my lashes. In November, I began searching for a coloured mascara. I recieved MAC Zoomlash Mascara for Christmas. I loved that the mascara is actually purple.

The Packaging

The mascara comes in a purple tube. This colour is reflective of the mascara colour. Attached to the top part of the tube is a wand applicator. The curved bristles allow the product to spread among each lash.

The Colour

This shade is called Plum Reserve. It is a bright, vibrant purple. It adds subtle tint to the lashes without the colour overpowering the natural lash colour.

MAC Zoomlash Mascara comes in 6 shades:

  • Beets Me – Brown
  • Plum Reserve – Plum
  • Green is Green – Emerald
  • High Esteem – Blackened-grey
  • Blue Charge – Blue
  • Zoom Black – Black

The mascara curls my lashes and lengthens. I enjoy the ergonomic ease of use. The packaging is lightweight and sturdy.

MAC Zoomlash Mascara retails for $21 from MAC’s official website. A smaller size of the mascara, from the company’s Little MAC Collection, retails for $12.

Summer Essentials

Change your look in three easy steps!

After sharing a peek into my makeup bag, I decided to write about my must-have cosmetics for summer.

Bright lip colour

I like all shades of reds and pinks. During summer months, I tend to favour bright lipstick shades. The main shades I return to all summer include a watermelon-pink, orange, and red. I recently purchased Too Faced Melted Matte liquid lipstick. I bought the colour Queen B; a mauve-lilac. It is a different shade from what I wear, but it is ideal for the summer!

Waterproof mascara

During warm summer days, my go-to mascara is waterproof. Waterproof formulas are ideal whether you are in the heat, cooling off, or readying for a night out.

Moisturizer is paramount to keep skin soft and smooth. If your skin dries after a day in the sun, applying a moisturizer helps replenish lost moisture.

Bright nail polish

Most times, I match my lipstick with my nail polish. Brighter nail polishes are fun and add a pop of colour to any outfit. In the summer, I tend to reach for pinks, oranges, and blues.

What are some items you cannot live without during the summer?

REVIEW: Benefit Cosmetics BADgal Waterproof Mascara

Happy Friday, everyone! I wrote this post while gazing over downtown Montreal.

Most of the time, I reach for drugstore branded mascara. I decided to buy Benefit Cosmetics mascara after receiving a sample at Sephora. I was on the hunt for a waterproof, smudge-proof mascara. I have long eyelashes, and tend to smudge my mascara when I blink! This mascara does not smudge.

The Packaging

As photographed above, the black and hot pink box gives off that “bad-gal” vibe. The mascara itself comes in a long, cylindrical tube with a silver top. The slimline mascara wand makes it easier to coat each lash.

The Mascara

The mascara itself is wet in texture. It does not clump when applied to my lashes. The mascara packaging promised long luscious lashes, and it delivered! This mascara still looks natural when applied. It lifts and curls the lashes. The mascara dries fast, making it easier to apply more than a single coat. This mascara is available in the colour “Rich Black.”

Benefit’s mascara is one of my favourites! This mascara gives my lashes volume, without clumping or flaking.

Benefit’s BADgal lash mascara retails for $26 on Sephora’s website.
