Your Ultimate Guide to Makeup Brushes: The Ones You Need and How They Work

Hello, lovelies!

Makeup brushes are an essential component of my daily makeup routine. I use a variety of brushes to apply my makeup products, and finding the right ones can truly transform the way your makeup looks. It is very useful to have multiple brushes in your collection. This guide to makeup brushes covers everything you need to know about how to use them!

Powder Brush

A powder brush has long, fluffy bristles to distribute powder (think loose, translucent powder) evenly across the face without leaving the skin feeling caked.

Blush Brush

A blush brush is slightly denser than a powder brush, and has smaller bristles. Most blush brushes feature a dome-shaped head that allows you to apply concentrated colour that can be built and blended.

Contour Brush

Contour brushes are usually angled and have softer, dense bristles that allow you to apply a concentrated amount of product to the face. The angled shape of this brush should fit snugly underneath your cheekbones for precise bronzer application.

Kabuki Brush

This type of brush has a flat top with soft, voluminous bristles to apply bronzer, blush or other types of powder products. A kabuki brush works well to buff product into the skin or into specific areas such as the forehead.

Foundation Brush

Foundation brushes come in a variety of shapes (angled, flat, fluffy) but the most common type is flat. The flat shape of a foundation brush is perfect for applying liquid or cream foundation to the entire face before percise blending.

Fan Brush

This type of brush has a dual purpose – it can be used to apply highlight or to clean up any excess powder on the skin. These brushes have lightweight bristles and are shaped like a fan to delicately apply powder highlight to the cheekbones and nose. These bristles also work well to dust away excess powder from the skin.

Concealer Brush

A concealer brush is typically small and flat to enable precise application to the nooks and crannies of your face. This brush is ideal for applying concealer underneath the eyes, near the nose, or the forehead.

Eyeshadow Brush

Eyeshadow brushes come in a variety of shapes. A fluffier eyeshadow brush works best to apply shadow to the lid and blend it out. Smaller, pointed eyeshadow brushes are perfect for applying eyeshadow into the crease or corners of the eye.

Eyeliner Brush

Most eyeliner brushes are slim and ultra-fine. The type of eyeliner brush I use has an angled edge to create thin, precise lines with a cream or liquid eyeliner.

Brow Brush

Angled brow brushes are ideal for applying all types of brow products (think powders, waxes and pomades). These brushes have a spoolie on the end to groom brows and blend the product once applied.

Lip Brushes

These brushes have a pointed tip to precisely apply lip colour from the tube. A lip brush lets you build the intensity of colour, or to outline and fill-in the lips.

3 Key Tips for Aspiring Beauty and Lifestyle Bloggers

Hello, lovelies!

I always enjoy sharing tips and advice with new beauty and lifestyle bloggers. When I began blogging over three years ago, I didn’t quite realize how much I would learn and grow as I continued to craft my blog. There are many pieces of advice I could give a new blogger, but here are my favourite tips. Whether you are a new or seasoned blogger, I hope you find these tips helpful!

1. Find your niche

There are many beauty and lifestyle blogs on the web. Finding a specific niche for your blog will help you find your writing voice and set your blog apart from the rest. If there is a specific topic within the broad spectrum of beauty and lifestyle that you are passionate about, make that your blog’s focal point. For example, I like to focus on writing a weekly beauty product review, and publishing weekly tips.

2. Plan ahead to sustain your blog

Pre-planning post ideas is the main way that I sustain my blog. It’s a good idea to have a plan of how you will maintain your blog, types of content you’ll post, and a posting schedule. Planning ahead and writing focused content will also help you curate a consistent readership among your blog’s audience.

3. Focus on writing great content instead of the numbers

This can be tough to remember as a new blogger. Every blogger dreams of having content read and shared by hundreds of people, but developing great content will keep readers coming back to your blog each week.

3 Tips to Effortlessly Apply Foundation

Hello, lovelies!

A smooth, flawless base sets the groundwork for blush, bronzer, and highlighter application. Foundation can be applied with a variety of tools or in different ways, but here are my top tips to achieve perfect foundation!

1. Prep your skin

Preparing your skin before applying foundation will help the product apply smoothly and increase the wear time of your products. Cleansing and moisturizing the skin before applying foundation will remove dirt and oil, and it will hydrate the skin.

2. Set foundation with a powder

Setting my foundation with a translucent powder is the main way that I increase the longevity of the product once I apply it. Most liquid foundations wear for 2-3 hours before natural oils start to breakdown the product, but setting foundation with a powder will prevent this and reduce any shine.

3. Stipple the product into your skin

Stippling foundation means gently tapping it into your skin, instead of rubbing. This can be done with a brush or fingertips but this technique will help the product bond seamlessly with your skin. My favourite stippling technique is to warm the foundation on my skin, apply it to a brush, then gently press it into my skin using tapping and rolling motions.

How to Make Your Own Instagram Highlight Covers – A Step-by-Step Guide

Hello, lovelies!

Instagram regularly releases new features. One of those features is Instagram Highlights, which allows you to save your Instagram stories directly to your profile. This is a great feature for bloggers, entrepreneurs, or anyone who wants to save special memories to their profile. Today I share how I created my own covers for Instagram Highlights.

I create all my Instagram covers with Canva. The website offers multiple options to create your own graphics, and it’s free!

Step 1: After you open Canva, click create a design. Click on blog graphic, then click elements on the left-hand side of the menu. Next, click grids and select the first plain picture on the left.

Step 2: Click on backgrounds, and select your preferred background colour. You are able to customize any colour, or upload a picture if you want a graphic instead of a solid colour.

Step 3: Click text then select heading. Type the title of your cover into the text box.

Step 4: Click on elements again and select shapes. In this menu, you can select a shape for your Instagram cover (I use circles, but you can select squares, hearts, diamonds, etc). Search the icon you want to use then add it to your profile.

Step 5: Click download to download and save your image as a .JPEG

4 Quick Ways to Grow Your Blog with Twitter

Hello, lovelies!

I frequently use Twitter to share links to my blog posts, but recently began to grow my blog with the platform. I shared my content but did not engage with my followers or fellow bloggers. Implementing a few simple strategies has not only grown my following but also increased my engagement on my blog.

1. Engage with your followers

If you’re using Twitter to promote your blog posts, it is important to engage with your followers (and potential readers). It only takes 5-10 minutes to scroll through your feed and like, retweet, or comment on your followers Tweets. This not only increases your engagement, but it also increases the visibility of your account and blog.

2. Create a call-to-action

I recently posted a call-to-action and asked my followers to link their blogs in one of my Tweets. This was beneficial for two reasons – (1) I was able to explore new blogs and content; and (2) Connecting with other bloggers grew both my Twitter account and my blog’s follower count.

3. Add hashtags to your Tweets

Adding hashtags to your tweet, or tagging a brand, will introduce your content to new readers who may not have found your blog otherwise. Exploring hashtags on Twitter also increases your visibility to brands you may want to work with.

4. Add images to your Tweets

Tweets with images receive twice the amount of engagement than those without. Your tweet will stand out more than text-only tweets, especially if it the size is Twitter-friendly.

3 Ways to Grow Your Blog

Hello, lovelies!

Growing a new blog takes time and effort. Based on tips and my own experience, I’ve created a list of three ways that you can grow your blog in 2018.

1. Specify your niche

What topics are you passionate about? To determine your blog’s niche, you need to think about the topics and ideas that you enjoy writing about. Also, you need to think about who your readers are. After you’ve determined your target audience, begin to brainstorm how your writing will benefit them. This process will make it easier to determine specific topics and categories for your blog.

2. Invest in a responsive theme for your blog

Find a theme that suits your niche. I like to select themes that are elegant yet aesthetically-pleasing. Themes that fit your blog’s main topics will encourage readership. A great way to individualize your blog theme is to select different widgets, colors, and font options.

3. Find a guest blogger

At first glance, guest blogging may not seem attractive. Including guest blog posts on your website is beneficial for many reasons:

  • Widen your audience
  • Improve your blog’s SEO with backlinks to the guest’s website

3 Ways to Creatively Use Dry Shampoo

Hello, lovelies!

Dry shampoo is a game-changer on mornings when washing your hair is not an option. Using dry shampoo absorbs excess oil, but there are also ways to use it to increase body and volume in your hair.

1. Spray the shampoo into specific areas of your hair

The best area of hair to use dry shampoo is the roots. Part your hair to one side, spray the shampoo about 10 inches from your scalp and repeat with the other side. Applying dry shampoo to the scalp will absorb the most oil from your hair.

2. Refresh your hairspray

Do you hate the sticky weight of hairspray? Spritz dry shampoo into your hair before hairspray to give your strands some grip. This trick will give your hair grip.

3. Add natural volume

Applying dry shampoo to damp hair adds extra volume. This will work best when your hair is almost dry. Simply spray shampoo along the length and ends of hair to add volume and lift.
