3 Basic Blog Design Tips for Bloggers

Hello, lovelies!

It’s that time of year again – time for another blog redesign! The appearance of a blog says a lot about its writer and is a great method to showcase their personality. I regularly revamp my blog design to refresh and brighten its appearance. If you feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of blog themes that are available, here are a few tips to help you design your website!

Select a simple theme

When in doubt, stick to a theme that is user-friendly and easy to navigate whether the reader is using a computer or mobile device. If you’re like me, you regularly read blogs using your phone, and websites that have a fresh, clean design are easier to navigate.

Contrast is key

Choosing contrasting colours ensures that your blog looks professional and polished. Avoid blocking your background with images – it distracts from the written content on your website. I often select a few contrasting colours to make my writing and images pop.

Select a simple header

Similarly to selecting a simple theme, selecting a simplistic header gives your homepage a sleek look. Selecting a simple header ensures that readers will focus on your blog’s content and images. I tested numerous headers when I began blogging, but switching it a banner reading ‘Glitter and Mojitos‘ simplified it’s appearance.

3 Reasons Why You Should Start Listening to Podcasts and My Top Recommendations

Hello, lovelies!

I recently began listening to podcasts and it’s truly been a life-changing experience. With a range of topics and hosts, podcasts offer a window into education, information, and passion. I’ll highlight a few of the podcasts I’ve listened to lately below, but here are my top three reasons why you should start listening to podcasts!

Reason 1 – Get Inspired: What inspires you? What motivates you? Chances are, there is a podcast out there that relates to your interests or hobbies. Finding a podcast that you enjoy listening to can inspire you to find new ideas, find information on new topics, and inspire you to become creative.

Reason 2 – Find a Creative Outlet: I enjoy listening to podcasts while I blog for the entertainment value and to spark my creativity. Listening to podcasts is a way to enhance your creativity and explore new ideas.

Reason 3 – Optimize Your Time: Listening to a podcast during your daily commute or while you’re waiting for something is a great way to pass time. Listening to podcasts while engaging in other activities will help your day, commute, or daily tasks fly by!

My Recommendations

Approachable by Samantha Ravandahl and Alyssa Anderson

If you’re a makeup lover like me, you’ve likely heard of Samantha Ravandahl. Sam is a is a beauty and lifestyle YouTuber who posts makeup product reviews, creates unique tutorials, and is one of the most unbiased, open vloggers in the industry. She recently launched a podcast with Alyssa Anderson, titled Approachable that discusses relevant topics including anxiety, alcohol abuse and millennials.

Dare I Say by Harper’s Bazaar

Harper’s Bazaar launched the podcast Dare I Say, hosted by Olivia Wilde (need I say more?) This podcast features a female celebrity guest each week with topics that include body positivity, activism, and diversity in the fashion/beauty industry.

3 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Blogging

Hello, lovelies!

Blogging takes time and effort. I’ve learned a few lessons since I began my blog, and have compiled a breakdown of some of things I wish I’d known when I started my blog that I will share with you.

Maintaining social media can be tiring

It takes time and work to maintain various social media accounts. As I write this post, I mentally note that I’ve barely opened my Instagram app in days. I sometimes feel pressure to consistently post on my blog and social media, but it is a good idea to take a break from posting. Consistently posting and preparing content can feel draining and it’s important to acknowledge that it’s okay if you don’t have posts prepared for every day of the week!

Be passionate

Writing about topics that you are passionate about will majorly benefit your blog. If you aren’t passionate about your niche and ideas, you’ll find it difficult to make it as a blogger.

Joining social media groups in your niche will be helpful

I’ve joined multiple Facebook and Twitter groups related to beauty and lifestyle topics since I began my blog. These groups are beneficial for multiple reasons. First, it’s wonderful to have a place where other bloggers share the same ‘language’ as you do. I also adore these groups when I’m stuck for inspiration. Finding new bloggers or content to read is an excellent source of inspiration when you encounter writer’s block.

3 Effective Ways to Promote Your Blog on Social Media

Hello, lovelies!

Social media is an effective tool to promote your blog, connect with other bloggers, and expand your readership. I regularly cross-promote my blog on my social media channels and it’s exponentially increased my blog traffic! Here are three effective strategies to promote your blog on social media:

Integrate your blog and social media accounts

Integrating your blog and social media accounts bridges the gap between each platform and your blog. People who are visiting your blog need an easy way to connect with your social media channels, and connecting both accounts ensures that the transition from blog to social media is seamless. I offer links to my Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook on my blog banner, and link my blog on each of my social media accounts.

Join social communities

Facebook, Twitter, and other social media websites are good platforms to promote your blog’s content and connect with other bloggers. If you are new to social media communities, start out by joining conversations with other bloggers before promoting your content.

Update your blog posts regularly

When you share your own content on social media, it’s helpful to repost older blog posts. This is helpful if you have new followers who have not read the posts previously, or if you are planning to revitalize previously-shared content.

4 Essential Beauty Products to Travel With This Season

Hello, lovelies!

The inspiration for this post came while I was sorting through my makeup collection. With summer approaching, I began to consider which items in my collection are travel-friendly and compact. Here’s a list of my favourite beauty products to travel with this season!

1. Tarte Cosmetics Hamptons Weekender Contour Palette

I typically travel with separate blush, contour and highlight compacts. This set is ideal for travel as it contains all three makeup products in a single compact. It is lightweight and small enough to place in my handbag.

2. Huda Beauty Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette

Full-sized eyeshadow palettes can be difficult to travel with. Huda Beauty’s new Obsession Eyeshadow Palettes contain 9 pans of shadow, and a mirror for travel. I love that these eyeshadow compacts are versatile and lightweight.

3. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara Mini

I love packing mini mascara tubes in my makeup bag when I travel. I’ve used mini tubes of Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara for a few months now and they are quick and easy to apply.

4. Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder Mini

Laura Mercier’s iconic setting powder usually comes in a heavy jar. I was delighted to find a travel-sized jar during my latest Sephora trip. This mini version of the powder is small in size, and lighter than the full-sized jar. This is a perfect travel-friendly setting powder if you don’t like travelling with full-sized jars of loose product.

3 Tips to Create a Perfect Smoky Eye and Mistakes You’re Probably Making

Hello, lovelies!

A smoky eye can appear tricky to master, but there are a few simple tips you can implement to craft an edgy look. Here are my favourite tips to help you create a perfect smoky eye!

1. Clean up your lines

Applying dark eyeshadow is often messy. To avoid smudging impacting the rest of your makeup, apply your eye makeup first to clean up any fallout. I like to use makeup remover or a Q-tip to clean up my lower lash line after applying eyeshadow.

2. Play with colours

A smoky eye doesn’t have to consist of black or grey eyeshadow. Try experimenting with rich, dark colours like plum, bronze, or brown to elevate your eye makeup.

3. Apply primer to stay smudge-free

Primer is a lifesaver when I create a smoky eye. Applying primer to your eyelids will ensure that dark shadow stays in place, and won’t crease.

What is your favourite tip to create a smoky eye?

3 Travel-Friendly Beauty Tips You Need to Know

Hello, lovelies!

While preparing for your next vacation, one major consideration you should keep in mind is how your beauty routine may change while you are away from home. Whether you’re flying, laying on a beach, or exploring a new city there are a few key tips you can incorporate into your beauty routine to keep your hair, skin and makeup in top shape!

Go for carry-on friendly products

My skin tends to break out if I modify my skincare routine. One way to maintain your skincare routine during travel while minimizing space is to pack products that are travel-sized. I love cleanser sticks or other products that are not water-based because they are easy to stash in my carry-on luggage!

Drink extra water

Aircraft cabins are pressurized in a way that reduces the humidity onboard the plane. I like to drink extra water during my flights to ensure that I stay hydrated. This tip also works for your skin – if your skin becomes dehydrated during a flight, make sure to apply additional moisturizer.

Always stash your makeup in your carry-on luggage

I like to stash my makeup in my carry-on luggage. I’m able to touch-up between flights and I won’t have to worry about my products becoming lost or broken during the flight. I stick to products that are non-liquids so that they can easily store in my carry-on without fuss!
